Carl Zimmer ’87

New York Times columnist and Professor Adjunct, Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry

Carl Zimmer graduated from Yale in 1987 magna cum laude with a B.A. in English. In 1989 he joined the staff of Discover, where he served as a senior editor from 1995 to 1999. Since then, Zimmer has written hundreds of articles for magazines including National Geographic, The Atlantic, and Wired. He began contributing articles to The New York Times in 2004, and since 2013 he has written “Matter,” a weekly column for the newspaper. Zimmer has earned numerous awards for his journalism, including the Stephen Jay Gould Award, the National Academies Communication Award, the Online Journalism Award, and the National Association of Biology Teachers Distinguished Service Award. Zimmer has written thirteen books, including She Has Her Mother’s Laugh: The Power, Perversions, and Potential of Heredity (to be published in May 2018). He has been awarded fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for his books. As professor adjunct in Yale’s Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Zimmer teaches writing to both undergraduate and graduate students.
